Clarifying Decentr’s Philosophical Synergy with Holochain
Describing our tech/concept is all well and good but clarifying and contextualising the philosophy that underpins it is, we feel, a better way to help people “get” where we’re coming from with our platform/“deconomics”.
We understand that what we’re proposing in terms of our tech/deconomics (“Decentr/decentralised economics”) is so radically-new it is almost without precedent. It’ll take a little time for the world to acclimate, and we’re here to help with that.
With this in mind, this post outlines, conceptually and philosophically, the foundational synergy we see between Decentr and Holochain (and hence the wider ecosystem). This is with a view to contextualising what we genuinely feel are the key principles at the heart all our shared aims and goals.
This context is critical due to the fact that once people have grasped this synergy, everything else we describe about Decentr — no matter how seemingly bizarre or ostensibly “impossible” (how many times have we heard that charge only to prove the limitations of asserting it?) — actually starts to make complete sense in concrete terms.
So, let’s begin. Our “Netscape for NGI” (or “Windows for Web 3.0/4.0”) pitch is 100% correct and accurate as regards describing our goal, but it doesn’t really get under the skin of our passion; our purpose and mission: it doesn’t fully contextualise it. It doesn’t let you, our prospective users and partners, in on the breakthrough first-principles thinking that led us to build what we are building and the reasons it is so urgent it is built.
To counter that contextual oversight, this post aims to appeal to all you Holochain/decentralisation evangelists out there, getting you all firmly on board with our aims and goals. We aim to do this by outlining a straightforward way we can all as a community achieve a core joint Holochain/Holonaut/Decentr philosophy: the creation of networks that resemble natural systems.
The synergy between us and Holochain is a tricky concept to grasp at the outset without fully apprehending our philosophical approach to development, so this post delves straight into what this philosophy entails.
This notion of understanding our philosophy is important because, we accept, what we are building can sound to the uninformed crazily and unworkably utopian — and hence our proposal risks sounding increasingly crazy as we begin to contribute more information about the Decentr platform/tokenomics/deconomics.
Well, it turns out it’s not crazy. We’ve built the core TRL 5 tech. So relax, gentle Holonauts. You’re not wasting time with us. It works.
So what it is it that “works” and how does this work in lockstep with Holochain’s ideology, tech, aims and goals — and we think the aims and goals of pretty much everyone who is into Holochain?
Let’s take this back to basics: overall, it would be fair to characterise Holochain/Metacurrency as wishing to build a Web 3.0/4.0 solution based on principles that are as closely related to natural, real-world systems as possible. That pretty much informs every facet of what Holochain does. Art Brock, Eric Harris-Braun, Matthew Schutte et al are very eloquent and clear on this point, and we agree with this principle wholeheartedly.
Agreed, then, this is the way the future of the net has to be. What Decentr aims to do is “close the loop” between the tech Holochain has built and the “real world” systems we all want to see comprising a Web 3.0/4.0.
How are we doing this? We are delivering a “user layer” for Holochain that will render dataflow (not only data storage) 100% decentralised across all hApps while creating a bridging solution to the current internet.
Once this is achieved, an incredible thing happens: with literally zero intermediary or centralised influence, what is actually created is a causal Web 3.0/4.0. (You read that right: we’ve seen it in action in our algorithms: it actually works.)
We’ll repeat that again, as it is so important: causation is at the heart of our Web 3.0/4.0 solution.
What this means in practice is that with Decentr acting as an integrated user layer everything on this Web 3.0/4.0 is relative (in the Einstenian sense); all interactions, communications, economic exchanges — everything.
Therefore, in a nutshell, Decentr provides (and it is our stated mandate to provide) for the online environment the ultimate framework for all real-world natural systems — relativistic causality.
Consequently, Decentr ensures the online universe obeys the same rules and laws as the actual universe. No distinctions, no incompatibility of any kind between users’ online and offline activity. How great is that?
Stop and think about the implications for a moment (implications that we will be breaking down in detail in future posts).
They’re truly mind-bending. Think about a net where accountability and consequences are an immutable part of its digital DNA; a net where proactive cause leads to exponentially networked, positive effect; a net where economic value is relative, dependent on engagement and consensus, and cannot be hijacked and artificially manipulated by the self-serving agendas of third-party actors. The possibilities for good are near-limitless.
The bottom line is (and this is what is so important for us as it counters the failings and faults of the current net) this “causal Web 3.0/4.0” means that all activity on a causal net will obey, as discussed, the same immutable laws common to the natural world. This means bad actors can no more “game” our system for unequal economic advantage, fraudulent gain, fake news, etc than they can “game” gravity, the evolutionary imperative or the formation of the tides.
Those systems keep ticking over, oblivious to the petty and largely mendacious and self-serving interventions of human beings. So does our Web 3.0/4.0 solution.
As a result, the only option left for Decentr users is the integrity of actions as expressed in corresponding outcomes that causation demands as an immutable foundational principle.
If that isn’t synergistic with Holochain/Metacurrency principles, we don’t know what is.
